“...Put the weight where you want and”


Following a visit to her pediatrician, a concerned mother followed-up on a referral for her underweight teenager to The Give Me Five℠ Program.


This young girl was committed to successful outcomes, which in her words included, “to be able to put the weight where you want and no fat tummy”, and she indeed accomplished that.  In the four and a half months of our working together, this young lady achieved significant success.


She was able to move towards a healthy body composition while enhancing her fitness, building core strength and decreasing her exercise heart rate (as measured by a standard 3-minute step test) by 7.8%.  At the same time she increased her weight by nearly 8% while she grew 1 ¼ inch, increased her body fat by 13% and her BMI by 3.3%.


Our work together included building strength and cardio fitness while learning the key elements of a healthy exercise protocol. Below is a graphical representation of her actual and target weights over the course of four and a half months.  This young lady is looking forward to continuing to workout with her mother at the gym and managing her weight in healthy ways.

Our entire family of three wanted to become more fit and healthy so we contracted to worked with Marsha Kunz at Give Me Five as an entire family.  Each of us-two parents and a teenager-- wanted to lose weight and also learn how to eat in a more healthy way.  However, we didn't have any idea of how to get started--and we each had a different idea of what we should do.

 

Marsha worked with the three of us as a family over a 14-week timeframe.  She started us out with a complete fitness assessment and then updated that again at 7 weeks and at our completion date.  During that time, we met with her weekly and she taught us about exercise, nutrition and fitness.  She showed us exercises and we did some regular exercise with her.  She integrated this with a weekly instruction about how to make healthy choices with food and the importance of putting healthy eating and fitness together.  We learned a lot together as a family about what foods are healthy and what we should try to eat.

 

As a result of this, our family developed a common language about fitness and food.  We now are able to talk about food choices at home and at restaurants with a common knowledge about what is healthy.  We support each other in our individual fitness programs because we know how important it is for everyone to stay fit.  Each of us significantly improved our fitness at the end of our timeframe working with Marsha, and have been able to continue being more healthy and fit.

“The Give Me Five℠ Program changed the way I live my life.  When I first started the highest weight I had reached was 161 pounds.  Within the  first few times I met with Marsha, I began to understand what is good and bad for our bodies.  Marsha taught me so much like the right portions and great ways to exercise.  But the best thing Marsha taught me was that I wasn’t going on a diet, I was choosing a healthy lifestyle.  When I was meeting with Marsha I lost a little bit of weight, but when we ended the program, I really started to apply all her lessons and I started seeing the weight just drop off .  I reached 132 pounds, which was the weight goal Marsha had set with me when we started the program. Today I still want to loose more weight but to me this program became not about the weight but that I was starting to live a healthy lifestyle, which will benefit me for a long time.
